![]() Granted, Konami hasn't confirmed whether Metal Gear Survive will allow players to invade each other's bases. Remember the same game that let you buy insurance for your base with real money and compensates you for anything lost from infiltrations? There are microtransactions though and they'll be pretty similar to the accessories and Forward Operating Base customization seen in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. It's the ‘in’ thing to confirm that your video game has neither pay-to-win mechanics nor loot boxes these days, and Metal Gear Survive indeed reportedly has none of these. ![]() Maybe the “dense” single player mode will allow for a decent story in its 15 to 20 hours of playtime? Co-op multiplayer seems fun in its own right, though that again depends on whether you enjoy this kind of gameplay. So far though, we have seen pseudo-stealth missions and there is an open world to explore. My one concern is that Metal Gear Survive only has a few mission types that all revolve around protecting the generator in some way or another. You may construct chain link fences and stab zombies through them with melee weapons to conserve ammunition, for example. The different kinds of fortifications and zombies you'll face can lead to different strategies. You gather resources to fortify your base, protect a generator and essentially wait for the zombies to arrive. In the words of the Great No Man's Sky Crisis of Faith 2016, “What do you even do?” Based on the recent beta, Metal Gear Survive has a surprisingly robust loop. ![]() The fact that Hideo Kojima isn't involved or even working with Konami any more (to say nothing about the rumoured friction between them) is even more evidence of this. While I don't doubt there will be some story in place, in terms of presentation and gameplay, Metal Gear Survive is divorced from the main series. You and a few allies are simply fending off waves of bizarre, crystal-headed zombies while gathering supplies. ![]() ![]() There's not much “Tactical Espionage Action” or faux political musings or the horrors that POWs face or even the action-packed borderline parody about self-identity that was Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Even if you're used to a wackier style of Metal Gear story-telling, Metal Gear Survive isn't that. ![]()
